Different types of residence permits

Your legal right to work/business depends on what type of a residence permit you have issued in Finland.

a. Free to work and change job

If you have been issued

• a continuous residence permit (A) on grounds other than employment or pursuit of a trade
• or a permanent residence permit (P)

you are free to work as an employee or as an etrepreneur. You can also change to another job.

b. Restricted right to work

If you have a continuous (A) or temporary (B) residence permit for working in Finland (as an employee or as a self-employed person) your right to work is limited to such work and such workplace that the permit is issued for.

You should apply for a new residence permit if you want to change professional field.

If you have been issued a residence permit for studies in Finland, you are permitted to do a limited amount of work.

Living in Finland

If you have got a residence permit and you are going to stay in Finland for at least 12 months you should also enter into the Population Information System. Registration for this takes place at a Register Office.
